[Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture] Sandanbeki Sightseeing Guide | Experience the Overwhelming Power of the Sea
Sandanbeki – A Cliff with Stunning Columnar Joints

Rising along the southern coastline of Senjojiki, Sandanbeki is a sheer cliff 50 to 60 meters high. Extending about 2 kilometers from north to south, its massive rock wall and striking columnar joints create a truly overwhelming sight. Watching the dynamic Kuroshio Current crash against the rugged rock face leaves a powerful impression of nature’s strength.
Despite its rugged appearance, Sandanbeki was selected in 2016 as a “Lovers’ Sanctuary” in Nanki Shirahama, making it the second such location in Wakayama Prefecture after Wakayama Marina City. A heart-shaped monument was installed near the Sandanbeki Observation Deck, where couples can attach padlocks as a symbol of their love.
Feeling the Sea’s Power in the Sandanbeki Cave

Sandanbeki Cave is a marine erosion cave located 36 meters below the cliffs. It is said to have once served as a hidden shelter for the ships of the Kumano Navy, making it a historic landmark of Shirahama.
After purchasing a ticket at the entrance, visitors are guided to an elevator that descends into the cave. Inside, the air feels mystical, with the sound of waves pounding the rock echoing throughout the space, creating an extraordinary atmosphere. Several points of interest can be found within—be careful as the ground can be slippery.
Bronze Statue of Muro Daimyojin
The largest bronze statue of Muro Daimyojin in Japan, weighing 3 tons, is enshrined here, flanked by Daikokuten, Bishamonten, and Sixteen Boy Attendants. It is said to grant any wish.
Ripple Marks
Formed about 16 million years ago when waves and currents moved sand and mud on the sea floor, these natural formations are preserved in the rock ceiling—an exquisite beauty impossible to create by human hands.
Blowhole Rock
Beneath the rock lies a large cavity where seawater enters and is blown upward through an opening. This rare sight depends on tides and wave conditions, so seeing a powerful spray is considered lucky.
Foot Bath with an Ocean View

The Sandanbeki Observation Deck is located right outside the cave entrance. From here, you can enjoy a wide-open view of the vast sea, often with ships passing by. The sunset from this spot is particularly beautiful. Nearby, there is a foot bath facing the ocean, allowing you to relax while watching the view. Seating is limited, so please share the space with other visitors.
Extra Time? Visit the Japanese Garden and Aloe Park

On the way to Sandanbeki, you’ll find Aloe Park, where numerous aloe plants are cultivated. From mid-November to early February, large red flowers bloom in full glory. At Fukukamedo, a souvenir shop before the park, you can find aloe-based cosmetics. Beyond Aloe Park lies a Japanese garden, which is also worth visiting if time allows.

Snack Break at “Sandan Street”
Between the Sandanbeki Town Free Parking Lot and the cliffs, you’ll find souvenir shops and eateries. Fresh turban shells and grilled squid are popular here. At “Isaribi,” whole grilled squid costs just 100 yen—after payment, it’s finished on the grill and topped with sweet soy sauce, making for a tender, hot snack. Other easy-to-eat treats like soft serve ice cream and corn, as well as light meals and ramen, are also available.
