Safety Information for Zimbabwe, Home of Victoria Falls: Beware of Pickpockets and Robbery!

In Urban Areas, Be Careful of Robbery and Pickpocketing

Because numerous crimes such as theft and robbery have been reported in Zimbabwe, the entire country is under a Level 1 travel advisory. However, the atmosphere in town may not always feel unsafe.
That said, crimes commonly targeting foreigners in Africa do occur here, so it’s important not to be careless. The most frequent crimes in Zimbabwe are “smash-and-grab” car break-ins at intersections. This involves breaking a car window to steal valuables, so when stopped at a signal, leave space between cars and watch your surroundings carefully. Other frequent crimes include home invasions targeting wealthy foreigners, robberies targeting foreign tourists, as well as pickpocketing and snatching.
Always remain alert and act with the awareness that your safety depends on yourself. Crimes occur especially often at night, so it’s best to avoid going out after dark.

Tourist Spots Have Security, But Caution Is Still Needed

At Zimbabwe’s top tourist attractions such as Victoria Falls and the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, “tourism police” provide security, so there is a certain level of safety. However, thefts and robberies targeting tourists still occur, slipping past the eyes of authorities.
There was even a report of a Japanese tourist being victimized at the Big Tree, a well-known sightseeing spot within Victoria Falls. After a tour group arrived by bus, locals pretending to sell souvenirs approached them, then threatened them with guns or knives to steal valuables.
When traveling in group tours, the presence of a guide may give a false sense of security, causing travelers to be less attentive to their belongings. Always stay vigilant.

Safety Measures Are Essential

The crimes reported in Zimbabwe are typical of Africa, so the measures below should be considered basic precautions for traveling not only here but also in other countries with safety concerns.
First, avoid standing out, as this makes you a target. Refrain from wearing flashy clothes, expensive watches, or branded bags. Choose a bag with a zipper and a shoulder strap, and carry it in front of you. Using your phone while walking makes you an easy target for theft. To avoid car break-ins, do not leave valuables or bags visible inside the car, whether parked or moving.
At night, safety concerns are even greater. Avoid walking, and ask your hotel to arrange a licensed taxi if you need transportation.

Stay Alert for Terrorism

As of February 2017, there have been no reports of terrorism in Zimbabwe. However, so-called “lone wolf” terrorist attacks have occurred in countries such as France, Belgium, and Bangladesh.
It is difficult to guard against terrorism, but you can take precautions such as checking safety updates on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and news outlets before traveling, and avoiding areas known to have poor security. Postponing travel during times of heightened risk is also a wise decision.
