Introducing the Tung Chung Line of Hong Kong’s MTR, which is surprisingly useful for sightseeing too
When sightseeing in Hong Kong, the subway lines most commonly used are the Tsuen Wan Line on the Kowloon Peninsula and the Island Line on Hong Kong Island. Because most of the popular tourist attractions are located along these two lines, not many people plan to use the Tung Chung Line. However, there are actually several wonderful sightseeing spots that can be reached via the Tung Chung Line. With stations such as Tung Chung (on Lantau Island, where Hong Kong International Airport is located), Sunny Bay (for access to Disneyland), and Tsing Yi (which also serves the Airport Express) connecting all the way to Kowloon Station and Hong Kong Station, this line covers a wide area and is indispensable when exploring the western part of Hong Kong.

Introducing the Tung Chung Line of Hong Kong’s MTR, which is surprisingly useful for sightseeing too
1. Hong Kong Disneyland
Some people may be surprised to learn that Hong Kong has its own Disneyland. You might wonder where such a large theme park could possibly fit in compact Hong Kong, but it’s actually located on the eastern side of Lantau Island, where the international airport is.
From the city center, take the Tung Chung Line and get off at Sunny Bay Station. From there, you can transfer to the Disneyland Resort Line, which goes directly to Hong Kong Disneyland. While riding the Tung Chung Line, you can even spot the cute Mickey Mouse–shaped windows of the Disneyland train! The park’s restaurants also offer exclusive Hong Kong Disneyland menu items, so Disney fans definitely shouldn’t miss it.
2. Ngong Ping
Head to Po Lin Monastery to see one of the world’s largest outdoor Buddhas, which also appears in movies. Take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung Station—about a 20-minute ride. As you pass through Hong Kong’s rugged mountains and enjoy the natural scenery, you’ll arrive at the Ngong Ping Plateau. In front of Ngong Ping Station, the Ngong Ping Village features a square that recreates a traditional garden where you can relax or shop for souvenirs.
Walking through the village, you’ll see the long staircase leading up to the famous Giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Climbing it is tough, but the view from the top is spectacular! If you walk along the side path from Po Lin Monastery, you’ll reach the Heart Sutra Woodlands, a spiritual power spot that attracts visitors from all over the world.

3. City Gate
The outlet mall connected directly to Tung Chung Station—Citygate—is a favorite shopping destination for both locals and tourists. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves to shop, offering everything from footwear and sportswear to familiar apparel brands like Calvin Klein Jeans, TOMMY HILFIGER, and BROOKS BROTHERS, as well as luxury names such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, and FURLA.
With around 70 stores, you’re bound to find something you love! It’s also directly connected to the Novotel hotel, making it perfect for those who want to spend their last day shopping before heading home.

4. Fishing Village on Lantau Island
Although Lantau Island—home to the Tung Chung Line, Airport Express, and Disneyland—feels highly developed, areas without train access still retain the charm of traditional fishing villages. Tai O, Pui O, and Mui Wo are relaxing fishing villages that can be reached by bus from Tung Chung Station, offering a stark contrast to the bustling city center of Hong Kong.
Since the bus schedules are flexible, take your time and enjoy at the local pace! You’ll see stilt houses, drying seafood, and experience the rhythm of daily life for the locals. It’s a great way to enjoy a different side of Hong Kong.
