Four Subtropical Tourist Spots in Mangshi, Yunnan Province, on the Myanmar Border!
1. Bodhi Temple
Located in central Mangshi, Bodhi Temple is one of the best-preserved Buddhist temples in the city. Its green-tiled layered roofs and elaborately carved beams make it one of Mangshi’s most iconic sights. It’s a place where you can really feel the influence of being close to the Myanmar border.
Founded in the 16th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1667), the temple was named after the lush banyan (bodhi) tree that stood in front of it. When you visit, be sure to admire not only the main hall but also the trees and plants throughout the grounds.
In Thai, its name means “Jewel Temple.” As one of Mangshi’s most popular attractions, it’s definitely worth adding to your sightseeing list!
2. Wuyun Temple
Wuyun Temple, meaning “Golden Temple,” is a historic attraction located on Wuyun Road in Mangshi. Built in the 4th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1665), it was the first Buddhist temple constructed in Mangshi. Its main Buddha statue was brought from Myanmar and revered as a treasure. Although the temple and its golden stupa were damaged during the Second Sino-Japanese War, they were later restored to their present state.
The roof inside is a double structure, with the upper section smaller and the lower section larger, creating a distinctive design. The central Buddha statue visible inside is the largest and most dignified. The surrounding decorations and intricate crafts beautifully showcase the art of local ethnic minorities, delighting visitors. This is a recommended spot for those seeking the spiritual power of Buddha statues passed down from Myanmar.

3. Sanxian Cave in Mangshi
Sanxian Cave, located 40 km southwest of Mangshi’s city center in Dehong Prefecture, is a natural tourist attraction. This cliffside cave is said to have been home to three immortals in legend, giving it its name.
Formed 2.7 million years ago, Sanxian Cave sits at an elevation of 1,669.48 meters. To date, 16 chambers and more than 120 points of interest have been discovered inside. Some chambers measure up to 30 meters high and 50 meters wide, with solid rock formations covering them. A 1,800-meter-long tourist path has been built, ensuring safe exploration.
The limestone-filled cave offers breathtaking scenery, drawing visitors into a magical world. The illuminated stalactites and rock formations are awe-inspiring. Highlights include the “Pearl Curtain,” “Stone Bamboo Shoots,” “Upside-Down Stalactites,” and “Stone Pillars,” all highly praised in reviews.
These mystical landscapes were formed over immense spans of time, drop by drop. The otherworldly scenery is unforgettable, making Sanxian Cave a must-see attraction in Mangshi that lets you lose track of time.

Today, it has become a popular tourist destination. The subtropical monsoon climate of Mangshi, along with fertile land, plentiful rainfall, and human cultivation, has supported its prosperity.
Walking around Mangshi, you can enjoy flowers in full bloom year-round, whether in alleys, parks, or private gardens. Bougainvillea, fragrant osmanthus, and azaleas—the flower of the Luchi people—are all common sights.
