When you think of Manhattan, famous places like Broadway, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Wall Street probably come to mind. With so many highlights, Manhattan is actually a very easy city to navigate geographically, making it perfect for sightseeing.
11th Avenue is the 11th street when counted from the east side of Manhattan—or perhaps it’s easier to think of it as the first street from the west side. One of its defining features is the row of automobile manufacturer warehouses, but in between you’ll also find plenty of relaxing spots such as cafés and parks. This time, we bring you a full introduction to the charms of 11th Avenue.

1. What Kind of Place Is Manhattan’s 11th Avenue?

11th Avenue is a major north–south thoroughfare that runs near Manhattan’s western waterfront. It’s a beautiful street with views of the Hudson River right in front of you. Along 11th Avenue stand high-rise buildings such as the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Silver Towers, and at street level you’ll also find stables for the horses used in Manhattan’s famous horse-drawn carriage tours.
At the same time, about 3 kilometers of the avenue run through part of the Upper West Side, one of Manhattan’s well-known upscale residential areas. 11th Avenue feels like an old neighborhood where long-time residents still seem to live. Although it’s slightly removed from Manhattan’s main tourist areas, we highly recommend taking a stroll along 11th Avenue.

2. The High Line

When it comes to popular sightseeing spots representing 11th Avenue, the High Line—where you can enjoy an elevated walk—is probably the most famous! This long, narrow park stretches about 2.3 kilometers from the entrance near West 30th Street at the southern end of 11th Avenue to in front of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Bicycles and skateboards are prohibited, so you can take in views of 11th Avenue in a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
The park was created by repurposing an old elevated railway that once ran through Manhattan. Running about 9 meters above ground between buildings, it feels like a secret base hidden in the city. Remnants of the railway tracks and stacked reclaimed materials are placed throughout the park, making it especially fun for children as well.

3. Edgar’s Café

On Manhattan’s 11th Avenue—also known as West End Avenue—you’ll find a café that’s popular with both locals and tourists. If the name rings a bell, you might be a mystery novel enthusiast. That’s right—Edgar’s Café is named after Edgar Allan Poe, the famous pioneer of detective fiction. Poe once lived in an apartment on neighboring 10th Avenue, and today, the ground floor of that building has been turned into a café.
The interior, decorated with portraits of Poe, has a very calm and cozy atmosphere. Their coffee, which was once nominated for Manhattan City’s Best Coffee, and their chocolate cake are especially recommended. 4. Riverside Park

Riverside Park is a spacious park that stretches for over 6 kilometers along the Hudson River. It serves as a place of relaxation for Manhattan residents and features many recreational facilities, including tennis courts and the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway for cyclists. The park is also rich in flowers and greenery, and in spring, when magnolias are in full bloom, a lovely fragrance reaches all the way to 11th Avenue.
