[Safety in Georgia] Although it has improved significantly, avoid approaching the border areas!
1. Beware of snatching and robbery
According to security information issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the entire country of Georgia is designated as Danger Level 1, with border areas elevated to Level 2, meaning “avoid non-essential travel.” Compared to the past, safety in the capital Tbilisi seems to have improved significantly, but caution is still necessary.
One of the most common petty crimes abroad is bag-snatching. In Georgia, too, theft targeting tourists frequently occurs. Criminals watch for moments when visitors are distracted with photography or shopping, so it is important to keep valuables on you at all times.
This also applies in restaurants and cafés. Leaving bags on chairs or placing them on the floor can lead to theft. It is better not to keep valuables in your bag at all, and instead wear a money belt under your clothing. In short, never let your guard down.
2. Avoid walking alone at night
Being accustomed to safety can dull your sense of danger, but walking alone at night is very risky in any country. Women in particular should be extra cautious. In Georgia, there have been cases of assaults such as people being punched in the face or stabbed with knives.
It’s bad enough to lose your belongings, but if you get injured, it may even put an end to your trip. Always act with the awareness that “safety here is not like some other countries.”
3. Postpone travel to South Ossetia, Abkhazia Autonomous Republic, and the Russian border area
The “South Ossetia (Tskhinvali Region) and surrounding areas, as well as the border areas of the Abkhazia Autonomous Republic” are designated as Danger Level 2 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In these areas, armed conflict seeking independence from Georgia broke out in 2008, and tensions remain high to this day.
Unexploded ordnance still remains in regions where fighting was intense. There have even been reports of ordinary citizens being detained. Because the Georgian government cannot secure safety in these areas, if you encounter trouble there, it will be at your own risk. When visiting Georgia, always make sure to obtain the latest safety information.
◎ Summary
Safety conditions vary greatly depending on the area, but many risks can be avoided with personal caution. Georgia, located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is a country where strolling through its towns is enjoyable. Thanks to its status as a wine-producing region, it is also a popular tourist destination among Europeans. As long as you are careful about petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching, your trip should be an enjoyable one.
