4 Must-See Tourist Spots in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic
1. Burana Tower
Located about 80 km east of Bishkek, Burana Tower is a historically significant site said to be part of the ruins of Balasagun, the capital of the Kara-Khanid Khanate from the 10th to 13th centuries. It is a popular attraction for tourists visiting Bishkek.
Originally standing 45 meters tall, the tower suffered severe damage due to numerous earthquakes, leaving it at its current height of 25 meters. Restoration efforts have been carried out multiple times to preserve it.
The tower is also tied to a legend. When a young daughter of a king was born, a witch warned the king that she would die at the age of 18. To protect her, the king built Burana Tower, forbidding anyone but servants delivering meals from entering. However, on her 18th birthday, the girl was bitten by a venomous spider hiding in her food and tragically passed away.
Beloved by the people of Bishkek, Burana Tower remains a cherished sightseeing spot. Be sure to visit when you’re in the area!
2. Osh Bazaar
The largest and most bustling bazaar in Bishkek is Osh Bazaar! Always teeming with locals and tourists, it is the liveliest marketplace in the city.
From a wide variety of dried fruits and naan bread—a staple in Kyrgyz cuisine—to exotic spices, Osh Bazaar has it all. You can even enjoy a walking food tour as you explore, sampling Bishkek’s local delicacies.
The bazaar also offers clothing, footwear, and household goods like handmade soaps. For a memorable keepsake, browse the shops selling handcrafted traditional items that make perfect souvenirs. They’re sure to delight anyone back home! Shopping here while engaging with locals is a fun experience.
For a quieter visit, it’s recommended to come early on weekday mornings, as weekends tend to get very crowded. However, be cautious of pickpockets who may target unsuspecting tourists—keep your valuables secure.

3. Ak-Beshim Ruins
Located on the outskirts of Bishkek, the Ak-Beshim Ruins may seem like just an ordinary grassy plain at first glance. However, a closer look reveals remnants of ancient structures and numerous pits scattered across the area. While this is a historically significant site, there is little information provided on-site, making it more enjoyable when visited with a knowledgeable tour guide. It’s fascinating to imagine that these grasslands were once home to thriving structures and bustling activity.
Interestingly, this site is also renowned as a location visited by Xuanzang, the famous monk from Journey to the West! On his way to India, Xuanzang reportedly stopped at Ak-Beshim, where he met the ruling king who provided him with recommendation letters and arranged interpreters for his onward journey.

Just a 30-minute drive from central Bishkek, the popular Ala Archa National Park offers a gateway to Kyrgyzstan’s stunning natural landscapes. As you drive out of the bustling city center, the urban noise fades away, and the vast beauty of nature greets you.
There are easy trekking paths suitable for children and the elderly, making the park enjoyable not only for adventurous youth but also for people of all ages and women. It’s not just tourists who frequent the park; locals from Bishkek also come here for camping, especially on weekends when families make the park lively. Tourism tours also allow you to stay in a traditional Kyrgyz yurt, which is very popular among visitors.
The weather in mountainous areas is known to change rapidly, and Ala Archa National Park is no exception. Even if the morning starts out sunny, rain or colder temperatures may arrive suddenly, so it’s recommended to prepare rain gear and warm clothing.
