【Breathtaking Views】A Hidden Gem in Kyoto: “Keage Incline” Through the Four Seasons
Keage Incline
The place in question is the Keage Incline. Once a railway, now repurposed as a sightseeing spot, it stretches for 582 meters, allowing visitors to walk along its tracks.
The incline was originally a railway used to transport boats on carriages, operating from the Meiji to Taisho periods to carry vessels from Lake Biwa. However, with the development of railway networks in the Showa era, it became obsolete. In recent years, it has gained attention as a photogenic tourist destination.
What kind of scenery touches the hearts of so many visitors?
Keage Incline in Spring
A sea of pink blossoms stretches as far as the eye can see. Over 90 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom along the tracks.
Although there is no night illumination, the cherry blossoms lit by surrounding streetlights are stunning. For a less crowded experience, aim for the brief moment as the sun fully sets.
Keage Incline in Summer
Once the cherry blossoms fade, summer brings a season of fresh greenery. Taking photos in a traditional Kyoto yukata amidst the lush greenery creates a cool and elegant image.

Nearby attractions like Nanzen-ji Temple and the Philosopher's Path are also popular for autumn strolls—why not explore them together?

Compared to places like the Kanto region or Osaka, Kyoto tends to see more frequent snowfall. When snow blankets the ground, Keage Incline is transformed into a magical white world. Quiet times, such as at night or dawn, offer an opportunity for capturing serene and mystical photos.
