As the phrase “Tea Town Shizuoka City” suggests, Shizuoka City has long been producing Shizuoka tea. The gentle slopes of Nihondaira, which receive plenty of sunlight, are covered with vast tea fields. The view of neatly trimmed tea rows stretching out, with the cityscape of Shimizu, Suruga Bay, and Mt. Fuji in the background is truly breathtaking! This is the first sight you should see when visiting Nihondaira.

At Nihondaira Tea Hall near the summit, you can not only take photos but also experience tea picking! This activity is available by reservation from late April to October. Be sure to capture this unique Shizuoka experience as a travel memory.

2. Night View of Shimizu Port

Shimizu Port is considered one of Japan’s “Three Most Beautiful Ports,” alongside Kobe Port and Nagasaki Port, and is also famous for its stunning night views. From Ginbōdai at the summit of Nihondaira, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Shimizu Port and the city, with Mt. Fuji in the background.

Mt. Fuji illuminated by the lights of Shimizu Port is truly elegant! The moments before and after sunset are just as beautiful as the night view, allowing you to enjoy the silhouette of Mt. Fuji while spending a romantic evening.

3. Kunōzan Tōshō-gū Shrine

Kunōzan Tōshō-gū Shrine is a spiritual power spot in Shizuoka, accessible by a ropeway from the summit of Nihondaira, crossing over a valley. It is the first resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, known as Tōshō Daigongen, before his remains were later moved to Nikkō Tōshō-gū.

The shrine is built in the same Gongen-zukuri architectural style as Nikkō and is incredibly lavish and ornate! The main hall, worship hall, and connecting stone chamber are designated as National Treasures. Additionally, 13 structures, including the Karamon Gate and connecting corridors, are classified as Important Cultural Properties. Most of these buildings feature red-painted pillars adorned with vibrant decorations.

4. Nihondaira Zoo

Located at the western foot of Nihondaira, Nihondaira Zoo is a popular tourist attraction that was renovated and reopened in 2013. It is also famous as the birthplace of Fūta, the red panda that became famous for standing upright.

The zoo is home to around 160 species of animals. While Fūta is no longer there, the Red Panda House remains a favorite among visitors. Other attractions include the Fierce Animal House 299, the Penguin House, and the Reptile House, which feature various exhibits categorized by species. Additionally, visitors can explore the Nocturnal Animal House, which reverses day and night for nocturnal creatures, and "The Mysterious Forest Castle," an interactive area that offers an adventurous experience.

5. Nihondaira Hotel

Nihondaira Hotel, located near the summit of Nihondaira, is known for its garden and scenery, earning it the title of a "Museum of Scenery." It has been chosen as a filming location for various dramas and movies, making it a luxurious hotel admired by many.
From the garden and the windows of each room, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Nihondaira. Meals can also be enjoyed with a view of Mount Fuji. The hotel also has a spa, which is a great delight for women, allowing guests to unwind in a luxurious atmosphere and forget daily stress.
