1. Mount Hanaoka
Hanaoka Mountain is a small hill with an elevation of 133m, located about a 20-minute walk north from JR Kagoshima Line "Kumamoto Station," where you can enjoy a casual hike. From Hanaoka Mountain, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kumamoto City’s nightscape, and during the day, you can also see the Shirakawa River flowing through the city.
As you climb the stairs leading to the Stupa, which houses the bones of Buddha (Buddha relics) said to have been gifted from India, you reach the observatory park. The night view from here is a must-see spot in Kumamoto. There is also a restaurant, so enjoying the night view while dining is highly recommended.
2. Hill of Prayer Memorial Park
The "Prayer Hill Memorial Park" located on Mount Dokkō in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is situated slightly south of Hanaoka Mountain. It is also known as one of the most popular night-view spots in Kumamoto Prefecture. The park is easily accessible from Kumamoto City and has a parking lot, which contributes to its popularity.
From the parking lot, you will walk about 10 minutes up a slope to reach the observation deck, where you can also enjoy the night view along the way. You can experience the changing views of the night as you approach the observation deck. The gradual transition of the sky from evening to twilight is also something to enjoy. You can take a walk in the park or sit on the grass inside the park to enjoy the night view in a pleasant atmosphere. It’s easy to see why this spot is so popular.
