The Striking Blue of the Niyodo River! A Complete Guide to Spots Where You Can Experience the “Niyodo Blue”

Niko Buchi

Famous for its Niyodo Blue waters, Niko Buchi is located along the Edagawa River, a tributary of the Niyodo River. The Niyodo River is known for having the clearest water quality in all of Japan, making it a popular destination for tourists who come to see the stunning waterfall basin and its crystal-clear flow. During the time of day when the sunlight shines directly into the basin, and depending on the angle of the light, the scenery becomes breathtakingly mystical and beautiful.

Niko Buchi is about a 3-minute walk from the nearest parking lot. However, since the stairs can be steep and the path uneven, wearing sandals is dangerous. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the incredibly clear and beautiful Niyodo Blue waters of Niko Buchi—a view like no other.

The best time to see the most beautiful scenery is said to be between mid-August and mid-January, particularly from around 11 AM to 3 PM. If you're planning a trip on a sunny day, definitely consider visiting Niko Buchi.

Omogo Gorge

Omogo Gorge (Omogokei) is a beautiful ravine located in Ehime Prefecture, at the headwaters of the Niyodo River known for its Niyodo Blue. The emerald-green clarity of the water rivals the Niyodo Blue itself in beauty. Take a peaceful walk along the scenic route and enjoy the stunning combination of the clear emerald waters and the rich green foliage unique to Omogo Gorge.

This is a perfect scenic spot for those who want to slowly enjoy nature while walking. You can also enjoy playing in the shallow riverbanks with children while gazing at the beautiful landscape. Why not visit Omogo Gorge to create lasting memories with your family or loved ones?

Yasui Gorge

Yasui Gorge (Yasui Keikoku) is a long 10-kilometer ravine filled with scenic spots throughout. While we can't introduce all of them here, we’ll highlight two recommended spots.

[Mikaeri Waterfall]

True to its name, “Mikaeri Waterfall” is so beautiful you'll want to turn back for one last look before leaving. The sight of the waterfall flowing into Yasui Gorge is simply breathtaking.

[Suisho Buchi (Crystal Basin)]

The water here is incredibly clear and calm, giving the deep blue a crystalline quality. The basin truly looks like a giant crystal. Depending on the season and time of day, the water may appear blue or green, making this a magical, ever-changing place.

Nakatsu Gorge

Nakatsu Gorge is one of the two most prominent gorges in Kochi Prefecture, along with Yasui Gorge. It stretches approximately 2.3 km in length, and with a maintained walking trail, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Niyodo Blue up close while walking through nature. However, some parts of the trail are without handrails or are winding, adding a bit of thrill and adventure to the hike. It’s a recommended spot for those who want to enjoy both nature and the scenic blue waters.

Along the walking path of Nakatsu Gorge, you’ll find various stone statues placed along the way. Searching for these statues adds a fun twist to the hike. As you walk alongside the Niyodo Blue, you’ll also come across a guesthouse called Horaiso. Visitors can stay overnight here, making it perfect for those who want to take a break during their trip.

Kuki Chinka Bridge

Kuki Chinka Bridge is the oldest submersible bridge in Kochi Prefecture. It features a rare arched shape, which is uncommon among bridges along the Niyodo River. It has become a beloved spot where people can take leisurely walks while admiring the Niyodo Blue. In 2004, it was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government, making it one of Kochi Prefecture’s most iconic landmarks. Enjoy the picturesque harmony of the bridge and the pure, clear Niyodo Blue.

Because of its historical charm, Kuki Chinka Bridge is perhaps the best place to fully appreciate the Niyodo Blue up close.

Nagoya Chinka Bridge

Nagoya Chinka Bridge is the southernmost of the six submersible bridges that span the Niyodo River, which is well known for its Niyodo Blue. It connects Hidaka Village and Ino Town in Kochi Prefecture and continues to serve as a vital road for locals while also being a well-loved sightseeing spot. Canoes are often seen passing underneath the bridge, adding to its charm. It’s also the closest submersible bridge to Kochi City, making it a great place for a spontaneous visit or relaxing stroll.

From upstream of Nagoya Chinka Bridge, you can get a beautiful view of the Niyodo Blue flowing between the riverbanks—ideal for commemorative photos. Be sure to explore and take your favorite shots from various angles at this great photography spot.

Best Time to See the Niyodo Blue

If you’re going to visit Niyodo Blue, of course you’d want to go when it’s at its most beautiful. The clearest and most stunning views of Niyodo Blue are said to be from mid-August to early January, which means the best season is from autumn to early winter. During colder months, the water appears cleaner because from February to August—spring to summer—algae tend to form, giving the river a slightly greenish tint when viewed from above. If you want to see the most vibrant, crystal-clear blue, plan your visit during the recommended months.
