6 recommended sightseeing spots around Katsurahama. If you’re visiting Kochi City, you can’t miss these!

1. A local aquarium with 85 years of history: Katsurahama Aquarium

Katsurahama Aquarium, established in 1931, is a long-standing facility loved by locals not only as an aquarium but also as a place of public education. Located inside Katsurahama Park, it's a great place to visit alongside your Katsurahama tour.

It houses about 250 species and 7,000 animals. While small in scale, the aquarium’s spacious design allows for a relaxed visit. There is also an area where you can interact with the animals, making it especially popular with children.

2. Symbol of Katsurahama where the Sea God is enshrined: Katsurahama Ryuo Shrine

Just a short distance from the aquarium is the Katsurahama Ryuo Shrine. Officially named "Watatsumi Shrine," it enshrines the god of the sea. Standing atop a hill that juts into the ocean, it gives the impression of watching over the entire sea. The view of Katsurahama from Ryuo Shrine is truly breathtaking.

It’s lovely to see the contrast between the red and white shrine and the blue sky on a sunny day, but the sunset view is also stunning. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to visit more than once.

3. A must for Sakamoto Ryoma fans! "Kochi Prefectural Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum"

If you want to deeply understand the life of Sakamoto Ryoma, you can’t miss the Kochi Prefectural Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum. It houses Ryoma’s personal belongings, letters, and other exhibits that provide insight into his character. Please note: the museum will be temporarily closed starting April 2017 for new building construction and renovation of the existing facilities. It is scheduled to reopen around spring 2018.

4. The impressive "Sakamoto Ryoma Statue"

While statues of Sakamoto Ryoma exist across Japan, the one at Katsurahama is especially impressive. Completed in May 1928, this statue stands 5.3 meters tall—and 13.5 meters including its pedestal! Seeing it up close is overwhelming. In the twilight of the Tokugawa era, Ryoma envisioned a new Japan. The gaze of the statue overlooking the Pacific represents the world that Ryoma foresaw.

5. Meet the Tosa Dogs at Tosa Dog Park

When people think of Kochi, many think of the Tosa dog breed. At Tosa Dog Park, you can meet these dogs up close. You can watch dogfights or visit the puppy area and play with the adorable pups. Watching the yokozuna dog make its ceremonial entrance is especially impressive.

Located inside Katsurahama Park, it's easy to access. Be sure to drop by to see the powerful Tosa dogs during your visit to Katsurahama.

6. Hugely popular! Delicious gourmet spot: Sanri Udon

Whether you want a hearty lunch or a light bite between sightseeing, Sanri Udon is a must-visit noodle shop representative of Kochi. You can customize your bowl with toppings like sweet-simmered beef or a big tempura chikuwa. Since you can change your toppings based on your mood, you’ll never get bored of it.

Their noodles are made with top-quality flour and crafted with great care—truly exceptional. There's parking available, so it’s an easy stop.
