Not Just Aso! Introducing the Scenic Spot of Clear Waters and Deep Valleys: “Kikuchi Gorge”
Reimei Falls

Reimei Falls is the first of the three beautiful waterfalls located along the trail in Kikuchi Gorge, which follows the flow of the Kikuchi River at the foot of Mount Aso. The name "Reimei" (Dawn) is said to derive from the picturesque scene of the waterfall bathed in morning sunlight and the mist that often envelops the area, evoking the beauty of daybreak. Nearby is a quiet pool of water known as a “deep,” which is another highlight of the Reimei Falls area.
The 5-meter drop, combined with moss-covered rock walls, creates a stunningly serene atmosphere that will leave you awestruck. The moss, formed over many years, and the sunlight sparkling through the gorge provide a truly enchanting experience. To reach this spot, simply walk straight from the gorge trailhead, cross the suspension bridge, and continue along the path for about five minutes. Take your time strolling along and enjoy the mystical beauty of Reimei Falls.
Momijigase (Maple Rapids)

Momijigase is a beautiful open area you’ll reach if you continue walking straight along the Kikuchi Gorge trail. In autumn, colorful leaves float along the river surface, creating a vivid, carpet-like landscape. Across the river is a gentle slope—perfect for laying out a picnic sheet and enjoying lunch. This spot is ideal for relaxing while gazing at the serene river and the surrounding natural beauty.
If you're looking for a place to take a break while walking through Kikuchi Gorge, be sure to rest at Momijigase. Swimming is unfortunately prohibited, but the water is exceptionally clear and beautiful—take some time to admire its clarity and tranquility.
Tengu Falls

Tengu Falls can be seen from a bridge located about 500 meters from the entrance of Kikuchi Gorge. You’ll notice that the river’s water overall appears a deep indigo hue. While uniquely beautiful, on cold or overcast days it might evoke a sense of somberness or eeriness. According to legend, a dragon once inhabited this riverbed, which came to be known as “Ryūga-fuchi” (Dragon’s Pool).
Adjacent to Ryūga-fuchi is the “Tengu Falls,” where ascetic practitioners who once trained near the mountain summit would descend to cleanse themselves at this scenic waterfall. While the indigo-hued water may initially feel unsettling, learning about its mythical origins gives the scene a different enchantment. Be sure to savor the serene beauty of both Tengu Falls and Ryūga-fuchi.
Shijūsanman Falls
Shijūsanman Falls is considered one of Japan’s most magnificent waterfall spots and is even included among the “Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan.” Though its drop is only about 10 meters, the abundant water flow, glowing stream, and lush forest combine to create a truly fabulous sight. In spring, enjoy the fresh greenery; in summer, the rejuvenating forest bath; in autumn, the colorful foliage; and in winter, snowy scenes and frost-covered trees. It has also been selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Waters of Distinction” and “Top 100 Forests of Japan.”
The name “Shijūsanman” originates from the 1934 Kyūshū Daily News survey in which it received 430,000 votes and placed first. It also reflects that the average daily water usage in Japan at the time was about 430,000 koku (about 7.8 tons). Don’t miss the chance to behold the magnificent beauty of Shijūsanman Falls—one of Japan’s iconic waterfalls.
Hirogawara

Hirogawara is a broad and scenic riverbed with flat rocks stretching along the water’s edge. The even surfaces make it easy to walk and give the landscape an expansive appearance. On warm days, it’s a lovely place to relax or even BBQ (where allowed), and in summer photographers flock here to capture sunbeams filtering through the trees. The sight of light rays shining through the river valley at Hirogawara is truly breathtaking—many photographers return time and again seeking the perfect shot. Kikuchi Gorge offers an abundance of unforgettable scenic spots—Hirogawara is one of its gems.
Please Support Maintenance Fees Upon Entry

The pristine beauty of Kikuchi Gorge is maintained by forest caretakers and cleaning staff, ensuring the safety and scenic preservation of the area. While Kikuchi Gorge receives over 300,000 visitors annually, severe flooding in northern Kyushu in July 2019 caused a sharp drop in international visitors. With traffic down, staff worked hard to restore the trails, safety railings, and overall beauty of the gorge.
Maintaining Kikuchi Gorge’s picturesque environment requires the behind-the-scenes efforts of many. When entering, adult visitors—including high school students and up—are asked to contribute a 100 yen cleaning cooperation fee. Please remember to support this effort during your visit.
No Car? No Problem! “Kikuchi Ainori Taxi”
If you want to visit Kikuchi Gorge but don’t have a car, consider using the reservation-based shared taxi service “Kikuchi Ainori Taxi.” Serving areas without regular bus or train service, it’s a vital mode of transport connecting local residents and tourists from town centers to the gorge and back. It’s generally much more affordable than a regular taxi when traveling to or from the gorge.
For example, after enjoying the gorge views, you could head to nearby hot springs or souvenir shops via this taxi. Make sure to book in advance with enough time to spare.

◎ For Gorge Sightseeing, Be Properly Equipped
Although the trails in Kikuchi Gorge are maintained, they include gravel paths and rocky terrain. For safety, wear sturdy, quick-dry footwear—such as hiking shoes—and perhaps even rain gear (like a poncho or umbrella) in case of sudden weather changes. Well-worn walking shoes or proper hiking boots will protect you walking across rocky ground or over suspension bridges. Plan your gear carefully so you can enjoy your visit safely and comfortably.
