The City Hall Area of Singapore is Full of Exotic Charm and Tourist Spots!

1. About the City Hall Area in Singapore

Located in the southern part of Singapore, the City Hall area is surrounded by various tourist attractions. If you’re visiting Singapore, this is a great place to start your sightseeing.

The nearest MRT station is City Hall. The surrounding area is a blend of colonial-style architecture and modern skyscrapers. Hotels, restaurants, art museums, and historical museums can all be found here, along with iconic spots like Merlion Park and Marina Bay Sands.

2. Merlion Park

The Merlion, Singapore’s national symbol, has the head of a lion and the body of a fish, representing both land and sea. It was once humorously referred to as one of the “world’s top three disappointments,” but in April 2004 it was moved to its current spacious Merlion Park location, where it now continuously spouts water from its mouth.

From the park, you can enjoy a view of the majestic Fullerton Hotel and Raffles Place behind the Merlion, and Marina Bay Sands in front—a truly iconic Singapore scene.

Behind the main Merlion stands a smaller “Little Merlion,” perfect for taking a photo together. At night, the Merlion is beautifully illuminated, creating a wonderful combination with the city’s nightscape.

3. Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a cultural complex that includes theaters, concert halls, shops, and restaurants. It has five halls of various sizes and hosts performances, live shows, and concerts by world-famous artists. Many free performances are also held, making it worth a visit during your trip to Singapore. Event schedules can be checked on the official website.

The complex also houses many specialty shops dedicated to art and music, including stores selling guitars, ukuleles, and sheet music—perfect for art and music lovers. More than 20 restaurants serve a variety of cuisines, from Chinese dishes to local Singaporean food. When visiting the City Hall area, be sure to stop by.

4. Raffles Hotel

No trip to the City Hall area would be complete without seeing Raffles Hotel, Singapore’s most prestigious luxury hotel, beloved by numerous celebrities and recognized as one of the finest hotels in the world.

Founded in 1887, its current colonial-style building was constructed in 1899. Only certain areas are open to the public, which makes staying here a dream for many visitors.

Raffles Hotel is also the birthplace of the Singapore Sling cocktail. You can enjoy the original version at the “Long Bar” on the second floor of the hotel’s arcade. For a sophisticated experience, the “Tiffin Room” on the first floor next to the lobby serves an elegant afternoon tea—reservations are recommended.

Please note that the Raffles Hotel arcade will be closed for renovations from November 2017 to May 2018.

◎ Summary

In addition to the attractions introduced here, the City Hall area offers many other points of interest. These include the landing site of Sir Stamford Raffles, the father of Singapore; the white St. Andrew’s Cathedral; the Singapore Flyer, the world’s largest observation wheel; and the War Memorial Park, where victims of the Japanese occupation are honored.
