Central, Home to Top-Class Restaurants: 3 Congee Spots Unique to Hong Kong
Central (中環), which offers easy access from Hong Kong International Airport, is lined with luxury restaurants. At the same time, Central is also a business district, where you’ll find affordable noodle and congee shops loved by local Hong Kong aresidents.
While dinner can be enjoyed in a glamorous setting, breakfast or lunch is often best spent mingling with locals over a bowl of Chinese congee. Many tourists come to savor the authentic flavor that’s quite different from other rice porridge.
With that, here are some recommended congee spots in the Central area.

Central, Home to Top-Class Restaurants: 3 Congee Spots Unique to Hong Kong
1. Law Fu Kee Congee and Noodle Specialist
The first congee spot is Law Fu Kee Congee and Noodle Specialist. Operating for over 50 years, it is beloved by locals and has three branches in Central. Most customers are local, but they do offer an English menu, making it a bit more accessible. The congee and noodles are both cheap and delicious, so even if you visit outside of peak lunch hours, the place is still bustling. Sharing tables is inevitable. Takeout congee is also available, which is a good alternative.
While their Century Egg and Lean Pork Congee or Meatball Congee are certainly delicious, the shop’s signature item is the Silky Beef Congee, shown in the image. The smooth congee simmered with beef and a hint of ginger delivers a perfect balance of flavors.
All the wontons and fish balls are handmade. This authentic congee, simmered for hours, has just the right seasoning and depth of flavor to satisfy even foreign palates.
Of the three Central branches, the Queen's Road Central branch is at the address below. The Des Voeux Road Central branch is at G/F, 140 Des Voeux Road Central. The Soho branch is at G/F, 50 Peel Street.
2. Yung Kee Restaurant
The second congee spot is Yung Kee Restaurant. If you’re familiar with Hong Kong, you might think, “Wait, you mean that famous Yung Kee in Central?” Yes, that’s the one. This restaurant has won numerous awards and is officially recommended by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. It’s especially famous for its roast goose. Their char siu (roast pork) is also highly regarded.
We chose to highlight Yung Kee here for its extensive congee selection. The menu offers 16 different kinds, ranging from Meatball or Sliced Fish Congee at HK$50, up to Abalone Congee for HK$180. It’s a great place for groups: share the restaurant’s signature roast goose and let each person pick a congee of their choice.
From Central Station Exit D2, go right, then turn left at the end of the street and cross at the traffic light. Head uphill, and it’s on the left after the second right turn.

3. Tasty Congee and Noodle Wantun Shop
The third spot is Tasty Congee and Noodle Wantun Shop. Located in Central’s main area, it’s easy to access and features a classy interior, but the prices remain relatively affordable.
Though the official opening time is 11:30 a.m., they often begin letting customers in earlier. This well-known restaurant won the Hong Kong Culinary Award in 2001, so expect lines during lunch hours. With its modern and elegant décor and illustrated menus, even tourists can order with confidence.
Many visitors go for the shrimp wonton noodles, but don’t overlook the congee — it’s delicious too. Be sure to order dim sum on the side as well, such as shrimp dumplings, crispy shrimp rolls wrapped in tofu skin, or the “Honey BBQ Pork Rice Rolls.”
Located on the 3rd floor of the IFC Mall, a Central landmark, it’s very accessible. You can even check in your luggage at Hong Kong Station and enjoy one last delicious meal before leaving the city.

◎ Summary
Congee is a staple breakfast dish in Hong Kong. With rich broth from chicken or seafood, it may seem simple, but it offers a deep, comforting flavor. It’s especially welcome when your stomach needs a break from the heavy eating of travel.
Local favorites include century egg congee or those with liver and offal — though these may be an acquired taste for some travelers.
