What is Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar International Airport)?

Ngurah Rai International Airport, located on the outskirts of Denpasar, the capital of Bali, is a key gateway for travelers visiting the island. The airport is conveniently situated just about 10 minutes by car from downtown Denpasar, making it highly accessible for both domestic and international travelers. It serves flights not only within Indonesia but also to destinations as far as Europe, creating a vibrant international atmosphere with visitors from around the world.
A taxi ride from the airport to central Denpasar typically costs around 200,000 Indonesian Rupiah (approximately 2,000 yen). However, travelers should be cautious of unlicensed taxis, known locally as "white taxis," which operate illegally.
Are There Direct Flights to Bali (Denpasar)?

Direct flights from Narita International Airport (Tokyo) to Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar, Bali) operate daily. However, on Tuesdays from Narita and Wednesdays from Bali (Denpasar), flights have a layover in Manado, extending the travel time by approximately two hours.
Recommended Connecting Flights to Bali

One of the best transit routes to Bali is via Singapore, and Singapore Airlines is highly recommended for this journey!
If you take a late-night flight from Narita or Haneda Airport in Tokyo, you will arrive in Denpasar the next morning. Additionally, flights are available from Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka, with Fukuoka now offering daily flights starting from March 2024. This makes it convenient for travelers to connect from various international airports in Japan.
For those departing from Narita, Naha, or New Chitose Airport, low-cost carriers (LCCs) operate flights to Singapore. However, passengers must go through Singapore immigration, pick up their checked luggage, and re-check in with the connecting airline before continuing their journey to Bali.
◆ KLM: A Top Choice for Flights from Singapore to Bali (Denpasar)

If you're flying from Singapore to Bali (Denpasar), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is highly recommended. While this route is also served by LCCs (low-cost carriers) and full-service airlines like Garuda Indonesia, KLM stands out for its excellent value for money.
Although KLM’s fares are slightly higher than LCCs, the baggage allowance makes up for it. You can check in one piece of luggage for free (up to 23kg, with total dimensions of 158cm), which is a great advantage compared to budget airlines.
This flight is part of KLM’s long-haul route from the Netherlands, connecting through Singapore before heading to Bali. Normally, passengers wouldn't be allowed to book only the Singapore–Bali segment due to the cabotage regulations under the Chicago Convention. However, thanks to special agreements between the relevant countries, KLM can operate this segment under what’s known as "fifth freedom rights," allowing travelers to enjoy competitive fares.
For a balance of affordability, comfort, and baggage benefits, KLM is a top-notch option for your trip from Singapore to Bali!
◆ Why Jakarta is a Great Transit Option for Japanese Airlines

For travelers who prefer flying with Japanese carriers like ANA or JAL, transiting via Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) is a great option. As of January 2024, Garuda Indonesia Airlines has a partnership with ANA, allowing passengers to earn ANA miles when flying with Garuda.
Additionally, while not available on all routes, some flights are codeshared with JAL. Depending on how you purchase your ticket, you may be able to accumulate JAL miles. Moreover, travelers can also choose to earn miles with Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, or other SkyTeam members, as well as Garuda Indonesia’s own loyalty program, GarudaMiles.
◆ Surprisingly Convenient Taipei Layover with EVA Air’s B787-9

For travelers from regional cities across Japan—including Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa (excluding the three major metropolitan areas and Fukuoka)—a Taipei stopover is a great option.
With direct flights from cities as far north as Asahikawa and as far south as Naha (Ishigaki route currently suspended), travelers can conveniently reach Taipei Taoyuan Airport. EVA Air and China Airlines offer seamless ticketing, allowing passengers to book their entire journey in one transaction. Plus, with through-checked baggage service, your luggage will be transported directly from your departure airport to Denpasar, ensuring a smooth travel experience.
Traveling to Bali? Here’s What You Need to Know About Indonesia’s Visa Requirements! (As of January 2024)
If you're planning to visit Bali, Indonesia, you need a visa! Fortunately, travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar. This visa is valid for 30 days and costs IDR 500,000 (approximately USD or JPY equivalent if paying in cash) or IDR 695,000 when using a credit card. Additionally, travelers must present an e-ticket for a return flight or onward travel to a third country.
Alternatively, you can apply for an e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) online using a credit card. The fee is IDR 500,000, making it IDR 195,000 cheaper than the VOA if paid by card. The e-VOA offers the convenience of skipping long airport queues, but keep in mind that the official application site is available only in English. If you are not confident in English, getting the VOA at the airport might be the better option.
