1. Kirishima Onsen Resort

The term "Kirishima Onsen Resort" refers to the collection of numerous hot spring areas spread out to the southwest of the Kirishima mountain range and Korean-dake. The nine hot springs, sourced from altitudes between approximately 600 and 850 meters on Mt. Kirishima, each have distinct mineral compositions and healing properties. Be sure to sample a few of them!

2. Flower Park Kagoshima
Flower Park Kagoshima is one of Japan’s largest flower theme parks, featuring approximately 2,400 species and 400,000 plants from around the world. Various seasonal events are held here; among them, the winter event “Winter Festival” is particularly recommended, showcasing the “Flower Park Illumination.”
Using an array of lights, the park beautifully highlights its flowers, including the enchanting "Tunnel of Light and Flowers." With a different theme unveiled every year, the festival offers fresh delights with each visit.

3. Ikeda Lake with Blossoming Canola Flowers

Ikeda Lake is the largest lake in Kyushu, formed by volcanic activity. With a circumference of about 15 km and a maximum depth of 233 meters, this lake is renowned for its natural habitat, including giant eels designated as natural monuments—some reaching up to 1.8 m in length and 20 kg in weight. Legends even speak of a mysterious creature called “Isshi” residing in the lake.
Every January, the area around Ikeda Lake bursts into bloom with canola flowers, offering a stunning view of the lake, the blossoms, and Mount Kaimon all in one panorama. The annual “Ibushi Canola Flower Marathon” is also held during this period, attracting both locals and tourists.
The 2025 event is scheduled for Sunday, January 12. In addition to the full marathon, a fun run of approximately 12 km (the "Ikeda Lake Course") will also be held concurrently.

4. Healthy Land Onsen Health Resort

The "Healthy Land Onsen Health Resort" at Tamatebako Onsen is famous for its outdoor baths offering spectacular views. The natural hot spring water here is rich in sodium and calcium. Guests rave about the outdoor bath experience that lets you soak while enjoying a breathtaking panoramic view of nature.
In addition to the open-air bath, the facility also features Western and Japanese style large public baths, private family baths, and amenities such as saunas, low-frequency baths, and bubble baths.

5. Sakurajima Magma Onsen “Kokumin Shukusha Rainbow Sakurajima”

Kokumin Shukusha Rainbow Sakurajima is famous for its magma onsen, with hot spring water sourced from approximately 1000 meters underground. The reddish-brown water, rich in natural sulfur, is said to have beautifying effects on the skin and will warm you from the core even in the harsh winter cold. From the bath, you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and Sakurajima.
If you’re lucky enough to see a snow-capped Sakurajima in winter, it’s an experience not to be missed! Nearby, you can also enjoy free foot baths at Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park.
6. The Popular Sunamushi Onsen “Ibusuki Hakusui-kan”

At Ibusuki Hakusui-kan, you can experience Ibusuki’s famous natural sand steaming onsen. This unique bathing method, rarely found elsewhere in Japan, makes Ibusuki a renowned destination.
The sand steaming onsen is popular year-round, but its appeal grows even more during winter. It offers detox and relaxation benefits that are especially welcome in the cold season—an experience that will surely leave you wanting more!
7. Izumi City Crane Observation Center

In Izumi City, you can observe over 10,000 cranes, which migrated from Russia, from November to March. These cranes are designated as a national natural monument, making them a rare and precious sight.

At the Izumi City Crane Observation Center, visitors can get up close to various species of cranes, especially from the second-floor observatory, where you can watch them dance and feed.
This spectacular winter scene of so many cranes overwintering close to residential areas is said to be unique to this location. It’s a special sight you shouldn’t miss!
