A trip to the warm port town of Yawatahama, Ehime Prefecture! 3 recommended sightseeing spots

1. Wood-fired bread and pizza are exquisite! The roadside station by the port “Yawatahama Minatto”

Next to the ferry terminal at Yawatahama Port is “Yawatahama Minatto,” the town’s “Marine Roadside Station,” which has become one of the area’s tourist attractions. The building is very stylish, making you want to stop by during your trip. Inside the facility, there are “Doya Market,” “Doya Cafeteria,” “Agora Marche,” and “Minato Exchange Hall.” You can even buy fresh fish and seafood at Doya Market and have a BBQ in the plaza.

The restaurants and food courts are also well-equipped. Local B-grade gourmet “Yawatahama Champon” and the much-talked-about wood-fired bread and pizza are highly recommended. This convenient roadside station is also perfect for buying Ehime souvenirs or picking up tourist information. During mandarin orange season, large orange displays will make your trip feel even more festive.

2. Enjoy fishing! “Sea Road Yawatahama”

As you drive along the Yawatahama coastline, a beautiful white bridge comes into view. This is the “Osakana Ranch Sea Road Yawatahama,” an outdoor fishing spot where you can aim for natural fish. Bring your own rods and bait to fish for your target species. Sabiki fishing sets are available for rent. The cafeteria has closed, so please bring your own lunch.

The tip of the “View Bridge” offers a panoramic 360-degree view of Uwa Sea. Take a walk to the end of the bridge and enjoy the scenery. About 60 cars can park in the free, dedicated parking lot, making it a nice stop during a drive.

3. Do you know the legend of the Heike clan? The famous flowing somen spot “Heikedani”

Ehime is home to many legends, and “Heikedani” is a sightseeing spot with a tale of the Heike clan. According to a tragic legend, the Heike clan, who fled after the Battle of Dan-no-ura, committed suicide here fearing capture. Today, Heikedani is a peaceful place located in the nature-rich upper reaches of the Miyauchi River. The flowers blooming each season are vivid and beautiful. Tourists visit during cherry blossom and plum seasons, as well as for hydrangeas, daffodils, and colorful autumn leaves. With walking trails maintained, it’s also recommended to stroll through the forest park and relax in the negative ions.

In summer, a “flowing somen” experience using the clear stream is available. While green onion and ginger are the standard condiments for somen, here they also provide minced onion for an extra boost of flavor. It’s so popular that waits can reach an hour, so definitely try it if visiting in summer. Enjoy trout fishing as well, and have your catch grilled with salt for a tasty treat.
