Tourist Information for Akiyoshido

Akiyoshido is located in the central part of Yamaguchi Prefecture, slightly west of Yamaguchi City, within the karst plateau of Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park.
Within Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, there are over 200 limestone caves, and the three caves Kagekiyodo, Taishodo, and Nakaodo are each designated as Natural Monuments.
Akiyoshido is given the higher designation of “Special Natural Monument,” and with a total length of 10.7 km, it is the second-largest in Japan. As one of the country’s largest caves, it is a popular spot bustling with tourists.

Features and Highlights of Akiyoshido

One of Akiyoshido’s defining features is that, typical of caves, its temperature remains stable throughout the year. Inside the cave, the temperature stays around a warm 17°C, making it comfortable in all seasons—warm in winter and cool in summer.

The vast cave is also home to a variety of attractions, including Nagafuchi, an underground river measuring 15 meters wide and 100 meters long; Ogonbashira, a 15-meter-long stone pillar-shaped flowstone; and Samidare Goten, where numerous stalactites extend from the ceiling. Within the natural wonder of the cave, you can enjoy a wondrous space created by nature as well.

Akiyoshido: “Romance of Darkness” Experience

Apart from the standard sightseeing route, Akiyoshido also offers a special exploration course called the “Romance of Darkness” experience. This course is held only after regular visiting hours if there are participants.
Unlike the regular course where the cave’s attractions are illuminated, the night course proceeds into the depths with only a single flashlight, the other lights turned off. Though you walk the same path as the regular route, the atmosphere and scenery feel completely different.
Additionally, the Romance of Darkness experience increases your chances of encountering creatures that inhabit the cave. You may discover rare cave-dwelling species during your exploration. Although a pitch-black cave can be a little scary, this adventure is filled with thrilling and fascinating discoveries.

Access to Akiyoshido

Akiyoshido, located within Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, can be accessed from many major stations in the prefecture, including Yamaguchi Station, Shin-Yamaguchi Station, Higashi-Hagi Station, and Mine Station.
There are also multiple parking lots, making it convenient to visit by car. Despite being away from urban areas, it is an easily accessible sightseeing spot.
When visiting other tourist spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture after exploring Akiyoshidai, renting a car is recommended. Be sure to book a hotel or other accommodations if needed.
