A Resort Port Town in Northern Mozambique! 3 Sightseeing Spots in Pemba

Meaning “Pemba Beach,” this sandy stretch runs along the ocean side of Pemba’s peninsula for about 8 kilometers. Behind the beach, numerous resort hotels line the shore, making this the showcase area of touristy Pemba.
At low tide, the water recedes far out to sea, creating shallow flats where visitors can run endlessly across the white sand and clear, pale-blue waters. Traditional wooden boats used by locals float here and there, creating a uniquely African scene.
In the late afternoon, you can see local residents gathering fish, shellfish, and seaweed along the shore. It’s recommended to enjoy both the African resort atmosphere and the local lifestyle at the same time.

2. Ibo Island

Before Europeans developed African sea routes, Arab merchants had already established a port at Ibo Island (Ilha do Ibo), located about 50 km north of Pemba. From the 17th century onward, the Portuguese built forts there, and the island prospered as a slave export port. However, after the abolition of the slave trade, it gradually declined, and in 1929, administrative functions were moved to Porto Amélia (modern-day Pemba).
Today, Ibo Island is a quiet tourist destination dotted with remnants of the colonial era, including ruins of forts and warehouses. Lodges and resort accommodations are also available on the island.
Access to Ibo Island is possible by small propeller plane or by boat from Pemba. It’s a recommended destination if you want to explore another spot in addition to Pemba.

3. Paquitequete

Paquitequete is a local beach area located at the tip of Pemba’s peninsula. Small wooden fishing boats float offshore, and just behind the beach is a fish market serving local residents. Since it’s close to Pemba’s ferry terminal, you can easily drop by to catch a glimpse of local life after enjoying a resort-style boat ride.
The beach stretches on for quite a distance, making it a pleasant place for a morning or evening stroll. However, note that it is not directly connected to Praia do Wimbe.

◎ Summary

We’ve highlighted three recommended sightseeing spots in the resort city of Pemba in northern Mozambique. In addition, Pemba’s old town has a traditional souk (market), perfect for souvenir hunting. However, note that in recent years, armed group-related crimes have occurred in Cabo Delgado Province, of which Pemba is the capital. As of 2018, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for the area, advising against non-essential travel.
It’s best to wait until safety and stability are restored before considering sightseeing in Pemba.
