Things to Do in Tokyo’s Hipster Neighborhood of Shimokitazawa

Often referred to as Tokyo's hipster district, Shimokitazawa is full of trendy shops and cafes, seemingly a world away from the flashing lights and neon signs of nearby Shibuya and Shinjuku. Here are some of the top things to do in Tokyo's little version of Greenwich Village.

Browse Through Thrift Shops

As you might expect from Tokyo's hipster center, there are plenty of second-hand stores lying around the area. You could easily spend a whole day just exploring the different shops you'll find around here. Some of the best thrift stores in Shimokitazawa are Flamingo and Stick Out. Head to these first and then work your way around the rest of them.

For the ultimate hipster experience, head down to Shimokata for some B&B, book and beer, sipping on a selection of craft beers while reading through an extensive collection of books. While it's mainly aimed at locals, there is a selection of English books to read through as well if you don't fancy practicing your Japanese. Shimokitazawa is a great area for bands to get recognition and start out, with a large number of live music venues, mostly at bars that often invite local bands to play there. Walk around the area at late evening and you'll have no trouble finding a bar that's playing music. You'll also find a number of shops selling vintage records and music memorabilia.
