Who is Katsushika Hokusai?

A world-famous ukiyo-e artist who was active during the late Edo period and is one of Japan’s most representative artists. Born in 1760 in Honjo Warigesui (present-day Hokusai Street, Sumida Ward, Tokyo), he spent most of his approximately 90-year life in Sumida Ward, leaving behind many masterpieces until his death in 1849. His representative work is Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which depicts Mount Fuji from various locations. In addition, Hokusai Manga is known as Japan’s first popular comic and has been attracting attention in recent years.

What is the Sumida Hokusai Museum?

A public art museum opened in 2016 in Kamezawa, Sumida Ward, Tokyo, Hokusai’s hometown, which houses and exhibits works by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. In addition to Hokusai’s original works, the museum holds exhibitions on diverse themes, incorporating works from other collections. In the permanent exhibition room “AURORA,” visitors can learn about Hokusai’s life while enjoying “full-scale high-definition replicas (reproductions)” and touchscreen terminals. The building was designed by internationally renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima.
