How to Access Sapporo Okadama Airport? Introducing Its Flights and Airport Facilities

When thinking of Sapporo’s gateway to the skies, many people probably imagine New Chitose Airport. However, Sapporo actually has another airport—Sapporo Okadama Airport (formally named “Sapporo Airfield”), which we’ll be introducing here.
This airport serves flights to sightseeing destinations within Hokkaido such as Rishiri, Kushiro, and Hakodate. Furthermore, during summer, small jet aircraft are just barely able to land here, so recently Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA) has operated seasonal summer flights from Matsumoto, Shizuoka, and Nagoya (Komaki) to Okadama Airport.
Located in northern Sapporo, Okadama Airport is close to the city center, making it more convenient for access to sightseeing compared to New Chitose in some cases.
This time, we’ll spotlight Okadama Airport and take a closer look at its convenience and airport facilities.
Flight destinations, schedules, and fares are based on information as of July 2023.

Sapporo Okadama Airport is located in northern Sapporo, about 10 minutes by bus from Sakaemachi Station on the Toho Subway Line. In addition to subway access from Sakaemachi, limousine buses also run to Sapporo Station, taking about 30 minutes to reach JR Sapporo Station.
Using Okadama Airport puts you close to places like Hokkaido University and Moerenuma Park, which are located north of Sapporo Station. It also offers good access to JR Sassen Line’s Yurigahara Station and the Asabu Subway Station, making it easy to travel in various directions.

What Destinations Can You Fly to From Sapporo Okadama Airport?

From Okadama Airport, Hokkaido Air System (HAC) operates flights within Hokkaido to Kushiro, Memanbetsu, Rishiri, Hakodate, and Okushiri (mainly on weekends and holidays). Although most of these routes are also served from New Chitose, note that Rishiri (winter only) and Okushiri are available exclusively from Okadama.
For destinations outside Hokkaido, HAC operates flights to Misawa and Akita, FDA operates flights to Shizuoka, Matsumoto, and Nagoya (Komaki), and Toki Air operates flights to Niigata.
Previously, most routes were only within Hokkaido, but thanks to FDA’s adoption of the Embraer E170 aircraft, operations to Okadama became possible during the summer season (late March to around late October).
In the future, with plans to extend the runway from 1,500m to 1,800m, the E170 will be able to operate year-round.

What Facilities, Shops, and Restaurants Are at Sapporo Okadama Airport?

Okadama Airport is compact, with only one restaurant and one shop. Note that after passing through the security checkpoint, there is only a juice vending machine, so plan ahead.
The shop “Sky Shop Okadama” offers not only Hokkaido and Sapporo souvenirs, but also exclusive items such as “Okadama Hormone”—hormone (offal) marinated in a special sauce made with the rare “Sapporo Yellow” onion—and Snow Miku merchandise that is hard to find outside the airport.

◆ Okadama Kitchen

Located before the security checkpoint, “Okadama Kitchen” is not only for passengers traveling for sightseeing or business, but is also a hidden gem where locals even drive in just to eat.
Here, you can enjoy gourmet dishes made with plenty of Hokkaido ingredients, such as “Okadama Curry,” “Gomoku Ankake Yakisoba (stir-fried noodles with a thick sauce),” and “Sapporo Ramen.”
Whether you’re about to tour Hokkaido by plane or returning home after sightseeing or business, Okadama Kitchen is perfect for killing time or adjusting your schedule.

◎ Perfect as a Base for Hokkaido Sightseeing♪

Although Okadama Airport may seem less prominent than New Chitose Airport due to its lack of flights from Tokyo, it is more convenient for access to central Sapporo.
While the airport previously mainly served routes within Hokkaido, the addition of FDA flights has expanded its network to destinations outside the prefecture as well. With both tourism and business in mind, the future growth of Sapporo Okadama Airport looks very promising.
